Carrboro Parking Update, A Special Election, and 2024 Inter-City Visit
Carrboro Paid Parking
The Town of Carrboro has proposed a new Paid Public Parking Ordinance to better manage Town-owned or operated downtown parking, optimize accessibility and support local businesses. Their initial plan is to make spaces free for the first 30-mintues with a proposed rate of $1.50 per hour thereafter.

Carrboro Special Election
On the ballot for Carrboro voters this November is a special election to fill the Town Council seat vacated by Mayor Foushee’s election last year. The filing deadline has passed and two candidates will be on the ballot: Cristobal Palmer and Isaac Woosley.
Orange County Promotes Travis Myren to County Manager
On June 13, Orange County announced the promotion of Deputy Manager Travis Myren to County Manager. Myren has served the county since 2015, he will take the oath of office on July 17. He succeeds Bonnie Hammersley, who is retiring. Read more on Chapelboro.com.

Trinity Court Redevelopment Groundbreaking
On June 3, non-profit affordable housing developer Community Housing Partners, in collaboration with the Town of Chapel Hill, celebrated the groundbreaking of the Trinity Court redevelopment project. The former public housing community will be transformed into 54 affordable and sustainable apartments for Chapel Hill residents. Construction is expected to be completed by August 2025. Teacher Pay Raise Approved
Governor Roy Cooper has signed legislation that will increase salaries for North Carolina teachers and school staff starting this summer. This legislative action, prompted by delays in last year’s budget negotiations, included substantial raises, with starting salaries for new teachers rising to $41,000.

2024 Legislative Short Session Recap – Emergency Childcare Funding
Before the end of the short legislative session last month, North Carolina lawmakers approved $67.6 million in emergency funding to support the state’s childcare centers through the end of 2024. This action delays the funding cliff feared by many childcare providers with the end of COVID-era federal grants on June 30. This step helps address an urgent childcare need and was advocated for by many business organizations including the Chamber for a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro.
